Professional Facials with your Skin Cycle

The skin is our largest organ, but it often remains one of the most neglected parts of our body.

Our skin is the most visible part of our body, and it is our first line of defense against environmental stress and threats.

Many people do not realize how hard our skin works to maintain its health. Thus, often it is miss treated, uncared for and susceptible to the wear and tear from our environment as well as from our neglect. This all can lead to increased signs of aging.

Fortunately, our skin has its own life cycle and is constantly working diligently to replace and protect itself.

The epidermis is the most outer layer of the skin, however it is also the most thin layer of the skin. It is constantly exposed to elements in our environment. The upper most levels of the epidermis is composed of dead skin cells that either flake or wash away over time. New cells are made below the epidermis and are continually moving upward toward the surface to replace the cells that died and sluffed off. Then, these new cells slowly harden and die themselves creating the life cycle for our skin.

After the age of 30, the cycle of cell replacement slows down. For a middle-aged adult, this cycle typically lasts about one month, and it gradually takes longer as time goes on. As we enter our 60s, it can take up to 8 weeks for our skin

cell life cycle to replenish. With the slowing of these cellular cycles, a greater accumulation of dead skin cells begin to pile up on the surface of the epidermis. This causes the structure of our epidermis to change, the surface to dulls, if you have an acne/ oily skin type, your pores will become more clogged and we develop more wrinkles as a result.

As an esthetician, I recommend that people have a professional facial about every 4-6 weeks. That’s how long it takes your skin to move through the full life cycle of new skin cell growth, and because our natural exfoliation slows with age it is beneficial to get a facial in this time to assist our skin with exfoliation and to helps that process along. A facial treatment will cleanse your skin, address any skin concerns while feeding and nourishing the skin. There are many other factors that may impact the life cycle of our skin including nutrition and stress, so even working for a few month for virtual skin consulting, we can work through other factors affecting your skin and skin cycle health.

I know that often life can get in the way of skin maintenance. Life gets hectic, and some people are unable to come in for a facial every 4-6 weeks. In that case, I have two suggestions:

1) Home Care- I highly recommend, working with me via virtual skin consultation to identify an appropriate facial exfoliant & skin mask for your skin type and trying to use them 1 time a week at home. Make it your sp

a time, even if they sit on your face while you fold laundry or make dinner.

2) Quarterly/ Seasonal Treatments- I strongly encourage clients to trying come in at least once a season.

The sun, heat and humidity in the warmer months can lead to breakouts & sun damage, while the cold and dry

air of the winter months can dry and irritate the skin. I recommend working with a professional in order to

ensure your skin’s life cycles are properly maintained.

Seeing your holistic skin care specialist at least four times a year will help protect you from seasonal exposure, protect against environmental stress and prevent signs of aging.
