Caraway Essential Oil

In 1999, I took a trip to the Czech Republic to see a dear friend who had been a foreign exchange student my senior year of high school. On this trip my love of caraway blossomed. It was used in the bread, the beer, the cooking, and it was so delicious! Honestly, I had tasted it before, but being immersed in a culture that used it so much truly changed my perspective and appreciation for this spice.

What is caraway essential oil used for, what are the benefits? Why is this an exciting special?

Caraway essential oil comes from the caraway plant, a member of the carrot family and closely related to dill, fennel, anise, and cumin. Caraway seeds yield an essential oil bursting with healing and soothing compounds that offer a range of powerful properties. It is a rich in antioxidants. Historically, both in spice and as an essential oil,it has been known as a digestive- soothing and calming upset stomachs, aiding digestion & supporting our gastrointestinal system. In clinical studies, Caraway essential oil, when taken internally, exhibited properties that helped reduce appetite and supported managing weight when combined with exercise.

Caraway essential oil smells herbaceous and woody. A drop or two of Caraway to an oil blends adds a warm yet fresh note. Historically, the use of the seed goes way back. Archaeological digs have found fossilized caraway seeds in Stone Age dwellings. Which suggests that humans have used the seed for at least 8,000 years. The ancient Egyptians are also known to have used caraway in herbal preparations.

The aroma comes from the chemical compound Carvone, which makes up about 50-60% of the chemical composition. Carvone gives the flavor that makes the seeds in dishes like sauerkraut, rye bread, and German sausages stand out. Limonene, a constituent commonly found in citrus oils, makes up about 30% of the chemical composition of caraway essential oil, and is known for its cleansing properties. This makes Caraway essential oil an ideal tool for oral care and keeping teeth looking clean.
