Historical Folklore of the Oils:
The history and effectiveness of these essential oils, being used for boosting immunity dates back to the 15th century, when the Bubonic Plague (Black Death) was sweeping over Europe and Asia.
According to a long-told historic tale, the Black Death spread like wild-fire among citizens and the doctors alike. It seemed impossible to be in the vicinity without contracting it, and at the time, if infected, death was the ultimate and final consequence.
During this time, however, in France, four thieves were captured and charged with stealing from the sick and dead. Despite their close contact with the Black-Death victims, none of the thieves ever contracted the disease! The standard punishment for the crime these four men had committed was death by burning alive. But the judge on the case was intrigued as to how these men had stayed immune to this uncontrollable disease, so he told them if they shared their secret he would spare them this punishment.
The Thieves told the judge their secret: they were perfume & spice merchants who were unemployed due to the closure of the sea ports and the devastation of the plague. They had prepared a special essential oil recipe that when applied to their hands,ears,temples,feet & a mask over their mouths, kept them safe from infection.The judge stayed true to his word.The men were not burned alive, but instead they were hanged for their crimes. But society learned from these crafty thieves, and from then on, the doctors who treated the Black Death victims put the herbal infusion on their hands,ears,temples, feet & wore beak-like masks stuffed with cloths containing this special blend.
This specific herbal blend that these thieves had created, was concocted from aromatic herbs, and was Highly Effective in killing all of the airborne bacteria. Some of the stories told, speak of it in a vinegar form, while others talk about a blend that was in a mask over their faces, but the essential oils they used are truly antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-infectious. They will stimulate the immune system, circulation, and respiratory system, and help protect against seasonal threats.

Uses Of On Guard Essential Oil Blend:
Diluted in a Roller Bottle – I like to keep roll-ons on hand to use topically. It makes application easy. To make the roller bottle blend, I mix the essential oils of choice with a carrier oil (my favorite carrier oil for a roller bottle mix is Fractionated Coconut Oil or Olive Oil) in a roller bottle and then massage this onto the bottoms of the feet Daily. If I feel I need an added immunity boost, I will also apply it to my chest,back of the ears & sides of neck, as well as the spine. You can also use roller bottles as an aromatherapy inhalers by just open them up to take a whiff as well! I use 10 ml roller bottles, which can be purchased online. Use the following dilutions for safety: For Babies- 0.5% dilution- 2 Tbsp carrier oil with 1 drop essential oil blend. Only apply a tiny amount to your hand and massage into the bottoms of babies feet. For Children 2-5yrs old- 2% dilution- 2 Tbsp carrier oil with 4 drop essential oil blend. For adults & children 6+ years- 10% dilution- 2 Tbsp carrier oil with 20 drop essential oil blend.
Diffuser – This is one of my preferred methods of use for this blend! It smells amazing, but it also works really well in the diffuser to clean and purify the air in your bedroom, living room, bathroom, and even kitchen! Using the recommended amount of drops for your diffuser, diffuse this blend throughout the house.
Personal Aromatherapy Inhaler – Aromatherapy Inhalers are perfect to keep on hand in your back pocket or purse, for whenever the need to take a whiff arises! The best part is you’re the only one who smells your personal inhaler, so the essential oils used will not offend anyone around you! To use, place 25-30 drops of the essential oil blend into a small glass bowl. Add the cotton pad to the bowl and roll it around (using tweezers, not bare fingers) until it’s soaked up all the essential oils. Using tweezers, remove pad and place in inhaler tube. After closing the inhaler tube, be sure to label it so that you don’t forget which blend it is! You can pull the inhaler out and take a few deep whiffs whenever you are are wanting congestion relief or to give your immune system an extra boost of help! Shower Steamers – This is a really great method to use when you are sick already and needing congestion relief. This can be very relieving and make you feel a billion times better when you are sick! I put 30 drops of On Guard in a spray bottle and shake it up, and spray over the top of my steamy shower just before I get in it. I get in and inhale deeply!
Cleaning supplies – You can put this in your own homemade non toxic cleaning supplies. Just a water, vinegar and 10 drops of On Guard and
you have an effective surface cleaner. Use it with castile soap and baking soda to create a cleaning paste for tough surfaces and tubs. Or just order a bottle of doTERRA On Guard Concentrated Cleaner to use to clean everything from your dishes to your floor or bathroom, and have the peace of mind that you are using a safe and effective non toxic cleaner.
Add to Laundry- DoTERRA actually makes a On Guard Laundry
detergent which is effective and non toxic! Did you know, Tide, the most popular laundry detergent on the market has 9 known carcinogens in it!!!! So Non Toxic Cleaning is important, especially when the cleaning agent will be on your clothes and absorbing into your skin. You can use On Guard laundry detergent or another non toxic brand, and then add a drop or two of doterra On Guard to wool laundry balls for your dryer. It freshens the clothes and helps them dry faster.
Room & Fabric Spray – I truly want to breathe happier, so I choose NOT to use Febreeze or other room spray products available in stores because of the bronchial irritants that they contain. Instead, I like to create my own room & fabric sprays using essential oil blends of my choice! On Guard is one of my favorites, because It freshens the air, makes everything smell great, and kills germs all at the same time!
Internally- DoTERRA is one of the few essential oil brands which makes food grade essential oils, which means they can be taken internally. (Adults and children 13+). A few drops can be added to
cooking to boost the spice- think pumpkin bread or make a treat of On Guard Popcorn of movie night, it is a favorite. Or add a drop to a bowl of water with apple slices for a yummy and healthy snack! I like to add a drop of On Guard to a cup of tea or coffee, if I feel a scratch in my throat to help boost my immunity. You can add a few drops to a veggie cap and take it as a pill
when you feel seasonal threats- a great blend is called the Flu Bomb- add On Guard, lemon, Oregano, Melaleuca and Frankincense to a veggie cap and take internally. (or make this same oil blend in a roller bottle to use topically if you prefer or on children)
Hand Sanitizer- DoTERRA makes great Hand Sanitizer with On Guard,which you can always order because it is convenient, but you can also make your own effective, non toxic, alcohol free hand sanitizer in about 2 minutes. All you need is a small spray bottle, witch hazel, water and On Guard essential oil. Fill the spray bottle half way with witch hazel and the rest of the way with water, then add 20 drops of essential oil. Shake and spray on hands.
